Background

From 2014 to 2017, GERES will lead a development project aiming at catalyzing the Improved Cookstove (ICS) sector in Myanmar through an integrated approach to achieve a high added-value for the local private sector, product quality control, improved access to ICS markets, and informed decision making at the policy level.

Specifically, the Action will contribute to the switch to sustainable consumption patterns and behavior by providing biomass fuel consumer groups in Myanmar with improved market-based access to quality Improved Cookstove (ICS) products. This will be achieved through fostering local production and distribution of affordable, locally appropriate and standardized improved cookstoves by entrepreneurs in Myanmar; as well as targeted, gender-sensitive promotion and marketing. The Action will also help create conditions needed to further develop the sector by supporting the establishment of national testing and stove development facility with the mandate to provide regulatory and quality assurance support.

Objectives

· In the framework of the project, fuel consumption studies will be implemented in order to characterize the baseline fuel consumptions before the project intervention and access the fuel reduction after introducing the improved cookstove.

· Study shall be implemented following the Kitchen Performance Test (KPT). The KPT is an international procedure to evaluate household fuel consumption. The version 3.0 of the procedure was developed by the Household Energy and Health Program of the Shell Foundation[i]. It is composed of one qualitative survey and one quantitative survey.

· The qualitative survey aims at identifying basic social, economic and cooking information of households. In addition, it is also used to identify families willing to participate in the quantitative survey.

· The qualitative survey aims at measuring fuel consumption before and after the introduction of the improved cookstove. It includes the following 3 steps: 1. Measurement of the fuel consumption with the traditional stove: done during 5 days (week days)

  1. Introduction of the new stove: train the families on how to use the new stove, the stoves will be left to the families during 2-3 weeks

  2. Measurement of the fuel consumption with the new stove: done during 5 days (week days)

“Detailed specifications and further details regarding the technical scope of KPT are available upon request”.
